The Tuatara 1000 returns in 2022 for the second edition. Providing a loop through Southland and Otago of just over 1000km of back country roads, at least 1000 hills and huge views, the Tuatara 1000 is the best way to see Southern NZ. The course is typified by long hard distances between resupply (for NZ anyway), lots of very quiet country gravel roads and friendly locals.

2021 saw Hayden McCormick finish first in 63 hours, with others touring and enjoying the course for the whole 9 days. The starting list is strictly limited to 100 riders and 2022 also sees the introduction of a shorter course, the Tuatara Iti (Iti is Te Reo for Little) is 500km long also starting in Gore.
