Justin McKinley recently published an in-depth video recap of his experience at the 2024 Tour Divide, where he pedaled from Alberta to southern Colorado aboard his singlespeed Moots before ultimately deciding to end his ride. Watch it here…
You might remember Justin McKinley and the beautiful 2009 Moots Mooto X YBB we highlighted in a Rider & Rig feature last summer in advance of his run down the Tour Divide route. After attempting the route on a geared bike in 2023 and realizing he wanted a different experience out on the trail, he found the Moots frame on Craigslist, made some customizations, and built it up single speed for his 2024 attempt. Last summer, he lined up for the grand depart in Banff, Alberta, Canada, and began making his way toward the US/Mexico border at Antelope Wells.
The video chronicles the 2,000 miles he made it down the route before ultimately deciding to abandon his effort due to physical and mental exhaustion and chronic knee pain that plagued him throughout his ride. It offers a unique look at the stunning course from the saddle and an intimate glimpse at the highs and lows often accompanying such an ambitious effort. You can watch it above, and keep an eye out for Justin this summer, as he’s been hinting at taking another crack at finishing the captivating route.
