Big Agnes has announced some updates to their Copper Spur tent series, including awning-style vestibules, more internal storage, and new corner buckles to simplify set up. Check out all the details here…
Copper Spur is the Big Agnes’ lightweight, freestanding tent series, offering more room inside the tent and a more comfortable sleeping arrangement when compared to their Fly Creek series. On the Big Agnes website, you’ll find the series within the ‘ultralight’ tent section, catering to those who favour both lightweight gear and a comfortable camp environment. Logan and Cass put together a comparative review on last year’s Copper Spur HV UL 1 and Fly Creek HV UL 1 Bikepack models, which you can read here.
New for 2020, Big Agnes has made some changes to the Copper Spur tent series. Specifically, they’ve updated the Copper Spur HV UL series, from their one-person model all the way up to their four-person model. Updates include a new awning-style vestibule, TipLok Tent Buckles at the corners, and a proprietary ultralight double-nylon ripstop fabric. We’ve outlined some of these standout features below.
TipLok Tent Buckles
The new TipLok Tent Buckles, a proprietary corner buckle system from Big Agnes, aims to simplify tent setup by combining three functions into one mechanism. The new design is said to hold the pole tip more securely, so it won’t release during tent setup, plus the rainfly attachment, tensioner, and stakeout loop are also integrated into the buckle.
Vestibule Awnings
Although this might be more applicable to hikers travelling with hiking poles, the vestibule doors on the new Copper Spur series are designed to be pitched out to provide a pretty substantial awning. This means for every model except the single person tent, users will have the option to have two vestibule awnings pitched for even more living space. For those without hiking poles, like bikepackers, the same setup can be achieved using accessory tarp poles from Big Agnes, aftermarket folding poles, or maybe a couple sturdy sticks.
The 2020 series also receives an updated version of Big Agnes’ proprietary ultralight nylon double rip-stop, mixed denier fabric that’s said to be stronger, without adding weight. Big Agnes has also pre-bent the centre horizontal span pole, increasing overall strength and stability. Lastly, some internal storage updates include an elevated ‘mezzanine’ bin a the foot of the tent, an oversized ceiling pocket, and media pockets and cord routing for electronics.
Limited quantities of the 2020 Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL 2 ($449.95) and 3 ($499.95) are available now, so head over to BigAgnes.com to learn more.
