Garmin just released its 2025 inReach SOS Year in Review, which shows when, where, and how its emergency notification features were used around the globe last year. Interestingly, cycling accounted for only a small share of emergency messages, with hiking/backpacking, mountaineering, camping, and boating outpacing cyclists and bikepackers in their use of the emergency systems. However, there’s still plenty of data to explore here, and Garmin said they walked away with more than a few interesting insights.

First, more than 3,000 inReach SOS incident messages were received. Users sent an SOS message most often during hiking and backpacking, followed by driving and motorcycling. There was also an increase in incidents during water activities, such as boating and sailing, with more boating issues reported than in previous years. Work-related SOS incidents jumped into the top 10 categories, which Garmin believes illustrates how organizations are using inReach technology to help equip workers for emergencies.

The company also says that injuries were once again the top cause for SOS messages, followed by motor vehicle accidents and medical issues like altitude sickness and heart problems. They also found that most SOS messages were for the person who issued the alert. However, an increased number of messages were triggered for another member of the user’s party or for a third-party individual. They’re also happy to report that with the help of professionally trained Garmin Response center staff, inReach users were able to self-rescue more than 12% of the time.
