Extending its range of lightweight camping gear, Alpkit just announced the Ultra 1, a freestanding solo tent designed for weight-conscious bikepackers. Designed and tested in the UK throughout a year and a half, the Alpkit team took product feedback from various other lines in their range while developing the Ultra 1, focusing on creating a light, livable, and comfortable sleeping space. The final product notably features a roomy vestibule, a high roof, and stable construction. It packs down to 42cm x 14cm (16.5 x 5.5″) and weighs in at 900 grams (1.9 pounds).
The Ultra 1 pitches with six included titanium pegs and is supported by light and strong carbon fiber poles. It features an easy-access side-entry door and a “porch” that’s 60cm (23.6″) deep to allow space for storage of shoes and gear. The tent sports a 90cm (35.5″) roof height that enables users to comfortably sit up and move around. It incorporates super light 10d Nylon with a sil/sil treatment for weight savings, waterproofing, and longevity—in part because silicone is more resistant to hydrolysis and UV degradation than traditional PU coatings, according to the brand.
Summarizing the new tent, Alpkit product manager Rowan Williams wrote, “Testing and developing a tent through all seasons gives us confidence in the materials, design, and performance of the Ultra. During the 18 months of prototyping, we’ve carefully selected materials that are not only able to withstand the elements, but also last longer than traditional materials. We’re proud to have created a tent that works harder for outdoor enthusiasts, and costs the planet less.”
