Ten Thousand Things is a podcast produced by Seattle’s NPR station, KUOW, that examines modern-day artifacts of Asian American life. The latest episode, “Bike,” focuses on the Seattle-based Ampersand Bikes Club (ABC), a group that hosts regular rides, meetups, and events for BIPOC and multi-racial cyclists. Host Shin Yu Pai sits down with members Andrew Chin and contributor to The Bikepacking Journal Kae-Lin Wang to learn more about the group, its 100+ members, and what led to their involvement.
They share about their experiences of Asian stereotypes while growing up in the US, the emotions they felt in the wake of the Atlanta spa shootings, the impact Ampersand Bikes Club (ABC) has had on their personal lives and the broader community, and the way the group has evolved since its inception. Amid rising anti-Asian hate crimes during the COVID-19 pandemic, Kae-Lin and Andrew also offer some thoughts on how ABC created opportunities for healing and showed people around Seattle and beyond that bicycles can be used to create joy, strength, and protected spaces.
