Throughout more than a decade, BIKEPACKING.com has emerged as a leader in bike adventure storytelling, bikepacking route creation, and in-depth product reviews and coverage from across the outdoor and cycling segments. Our platform is made up of a website with more than 6,000 original articles, a thriving global community of Bikepacking Collective members, a growing YouTube channel, and The Bikepacking Journal, our acclaimed bi-annually printed publication showcasing the best in pedal-powered storytelling and photography from around the world. We’re listed among the top 10 cycling media websites worldwide according to popular ranking tools. This roster includes major entities such as PinkBike, Specialized, and Bicycling Magazine. We also have a notable social following, including nearly a half million active followers on several platforms.
Structurally, we’re a small team of a few full-timers and a close-knit circle of regular contributors and advisors. We’ve flourished through our shared passion for this niche activity and a bootstrap mentality. We’ve experienced dramatic growth over the past few years, and it’s time for our team to follow suit. Senior Tech Editor
We’re seeking someone to join the team as a full-time Senior Tech Editor who’s based in the United States. If you’re passionate about bikepacking, a variety of off-road cycling disciplines, and innovative bike and gear content that’s honest, interesting, and well-informed, please read the responsibilities and requirements below.
Potential Job Responsibilities
Job responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Help manage the flow of tech- and gear-related content across the platform, working with our small team of writers and editors to prioritize, plan, and schedule new content
- Help identify the most important and compelling gear in the cycling, outdoor, and camping spaces
- Produce authoritative, detailed, engaging, and unbiased reviews
- Liaise with bike and outdoor industry companies to ensure access to new and upcoming products for review
- Evaluate and offer suggestions on drafted reviews and tech-related content by other writers for clarity, accuracy, and style
- Travel to and document one to two industry trade shows or events per year
- Coordinate, schedule, and produce time-of-launch news coverage for new products on a daily basis
- Play a key role in crafting the vision and voice for our platform by participating in ongoing discussion and decision-making in a variety of subjects, from design feedback to business strategy
Experience and Skills
- Regularly ride mountain bikes, ATBs, and gravel bikes and be interested in a variety of styles and types of bikes within this broad genre—equal interest in outdoor and camping gear is a plus
- Deep knowledge of the mechanics and engineering of off-road bicycles and the industry standards and trends that underpin mountain biking, gravel cycling, and bikepacking
- Ability to plan, craft, and produce engaging writing with clean, SEO-friendly copy, proper English grammar, and a compelling style
- Proficiency using Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom
- Proficiency in taking high-quality product photographs and a willingness to learn and adapt to our high standards
- Previous writing/editing experience is a must; previous experience at a cycling or outdoor publication or similar entity preferred
- Comfort and willingness to work with a team across multiple time zones via Slack chat and Zoom video calls
Bikepacking Routes Director
We’re seeking someone to join the team as a full- or part-time Routes Director who’s based in the United States. If you’re passionate about building meaningful bikepacking routes and helping develop and evolve the world’s preeminent bikepacking routes network, please read the responsibilities and requirements below.
Potential Job Responsibilities
Job responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Focus on building our first-of-its-kind network of high-quality, community-created bikepacking routes, primarily within the US, but also in other key locales, such as Canada, the UK, and the EU
- Facilitate relationships and help further develop our Route Stewards and Route Scouts programs
- Help plan, facilitate, and bring to life original bikepacking routes—mainly in the US, but elsewhere as well
- Identify and develop opportunities, such as Bikepacking Route Networks and Hubs
- Monitor incoming route submissions and work closely with route creators to finalize and publish routes and overnighters within our network
- Organize Route Alert and route maintenance process and help facilitate ongoing changes to existing routes
- Help build the Local Overnighter Project and other route initiatives
- Play a key role in crafting the vision and voice for our platform by participating in ongoing discussion and decision-making, specifically as it pertains to growing and evolving our Bikepacking Routes initiatives
Experience and Skills
- Experience touring and bikepacking, and proficiency at building routes that are refined, purpose-driven, and compelling
- Deep knowledge and skills in mapping software and tools, such as Ride With GPS, Gaia, and other utilities needed for GPX file creation and distribution
- Ability and desire to work with people, manage interesting routes projects, and assist with developing and refining excellent bikepacking routes to be published within our network
- Experience working with outdoor organizations, institutions, and other such entities is a major plus
- Knowledge and experience with grant-writing or funds-generation efforts through outdoor recreation is ideal
- Proficiency in taking high-quality product photographs is a plus, with a willingness to learn and adapt to our high standards
- Previous writing/editing experience is a must; previous experience at a cycling or outdoor publication or similar entity is preferred
- Comfort and willingness to work with a team across multiple time zones via Slack chat and Zoom video calls
Salary and Perks
We’re looking for experienced and talented individuals for both of these senior positions and will offer competitive salaries to match. Both are to be determined based on experience, defined role, and capacity.
