The high Andes of Ecuador offer some of the most demanding and rewarding bikepacking in the world. Steep climbs over muddy tracks and ancient cobblestone roads are only accentuated by thin air and relentless winds that sweep across every high mountain pass.
Yet for those willing to endure the hardship, La Ruta de los Tres Volcanes delivers in spectacular fashion. The route reveals wild campsites beyond imagination, long days of riding through vast, open landscapes, and dirt roads that cut through regions inhabited only by the hardiest of shepherds. Towering above it all are Ecuador’s most iconic volcanoes: the near-perfect cone of Cotopaxi, the laguna-filled Quilotoa, and finally Chimborazo, whose peak is the closest point on Earth to outer space.
The journey is as rich culturally as it is visually. I slept in a rural schoolhouse in a tiny village, shared conversations with the ever-friendly Quichua people, Indigenous to Ecuador’s highlands, and more than anything, I had an incredible time.
