Announced more than a year ago but delayed due to COVID-19-related shutdowns, the Black Mountain Cycles Mod Zero has finally landed. In short, the Mod Zero is replacing their MCD and Road+ frames to satisfy new minimum order numbers and is named after the Modelo beer cans that Mike Varley, the owner of Black Mountain Cycles, sees riding around West Marin, California. The Mod Zero is the bike Mike would design if he was just starting out.

It’s built up around a double butted chromoly steel frame and matching fork. It has clearance for 700 x 50mm or 27.5 x 2.25″ tires, flat mount brakes front and rear, a straight head tube, and a 68mm threaded bottom bracket. The frame is designed around road or gravel cranksets and plays nicely with 1x setups. It runs a 27.2mm seatpost, has dropper post routing, and has non-boost thru-axles. There are loads of mounts all over, including three bottle mounts inside the main triangle, triple pack mounts under the downtube, triple pack fork mounts, and rack and fender mounts.

As for geometry, it fits somewhere in between the MCD and Road+ but leans towards the MCD. It’s a monster-cross gravel bike with reasonable tire clearance, a 71-72° head tube angle, 72-70mm bottom bracket drop, and 1,028-1,084mm wheelbase, depending on the frame size. The Mod Zero comes in six sizes and two colors, Signal Yellow or Go Green. Framesets are available to purchase now for $1,145 USD, and Black Mountain has several complete builds listed on the site that are available with a $2,000 deposit, with the final cost between $3,500 and $4,000.
