On Saturday, the Hunt 1000 in Australia celebrated a collective finish rather than a grand depart. Around half of the riders finished the full 1,000-kilometer route between Canberra and Melbourne, navigating a challenging route through Australia’s high country. The Hunt 1000, a self-supported bikepacking event traversing Australia’s high country, wrapped up on Saturday for the grand finish in Melbourne. Starting in Canberra, riders tackled 1,000 kilometers of tough terrain through Kosciuszko, the Alpine National Park, and the remote Jagungal Wilderness. Persistent rain and muddy trails made for a challenging year, but riders were rewarded with big views between the mist and moments of camaraderie that have come to define this event.

This year brought some standout stories, including Tom Moschitz’s incredible finish in just over four and a half days, and the father-and-son duo, Mark Gilbert and 13-year-old Nicky, who returned after completing the 500-kilometer route last year to tackle the full 1,000 kilometers. From battling the infamous Cobbler Track to sharing meals in alpine huts during storms, plenty of memories were made on the mountain trails once again.

For those eager for a new challenge sooner, the Sydney to Summit event—a ride from Sydney to Mount Kosciuszko in the same Hunt 1000 format—is set to kick off in February 2025. Learn more here.
