What started as a creative project for Bailey Van Etten of Bellingham, Washington, has, as of today, become a small business focused on releasing niche products into the bike world and beyond. Bailey is making his debut with the release of two bags he calls On-Tube Storage: a small version (110 x 50 x 60mm, $45) with a straightforward design that attaches to dedicated frame mounts and a larger size (185 x 55 x 65mm, $65) with an internal stabilizing plate that can be used on frame mounts or via a more universal strap mount. Each comes in five color/fabric combos and can fit a wide variety of bikes.
Speaking to the inspiration behind the On-Tube Storage line, Bailey said, “The original idea came from a friend who needed a bag for carrying his glasses up the hill without them getting foggy. Once people started seeing it, they wanted a way to carry their own stuff, so I got to making, and ended up with the more refined design we have today.”
Looking beyond these limited initial products, Bailey is already working on several additional ideas from his small studio, where everything is made, and collaboration is core to his aims for Friend&Fiend. After nearly two decades in the bike industry, he hopes to work with other brands, artists, and makers on future ideas. “The coolest stuff comes from things that feel a little bit DIY,” he added.
