The new Gossamer Gear DCF Whisper is a super ultralight Dyneema composite shelter for minimalist backpackers, but it might just fit the bill for some bikepackers too. It’s a trekking-pole-style shelter that doesn’t have an integrated floor but features a generously sized mesh skirt to keep bugs at bay and improve ventilation. It requires two trekking poles (or adjustable poles) and seven stakes for setup, and the floorless design means you’ll need to pack your own ground sheet in wet or muddy conditions.
The DCF Whisper has taped seams throughout, a sewn and taped ridgeline, a spacious vestibule, reflective guy lines, and a door tie-back. The shelter itself weighs just 9.8 ounces (277.8 grams) without the included stuff sack or required stakes and poles. The shelter is 102″ long, 49″ wide at the head end, 51.3″ tall at the highest point, and packs down to 5″ x 13″. The body is made from a 0.51 oz Bio based DCF fabric, and the skirt is a 15D nylon no-see-um mesh.
The Gossamer DCF Whisper costs $499 USD (without poles or stakes), and only 100 are being produced. Learn more at GossamerGear.com.
