The Growtac Control Levers FAQs is a new video from Igor of Velo Orange that dives into some common questions about the newly launched friction brifters. With plenty of insight on pull ratio, compatibility, and more, it’s a worthwhile watch…

Released last week, the Growtac Control Levers have created quite a stir. Though friction shifters have been available and easily accessible to modern setups through bar ends and the like for decades, there hasn’t really been a way to integrate friction shifting with a “brifter” (brake and shifter) setup until now. Lucas dove into it a little more here, but, naturally, there were a lot of questions. Igor of Velo Orange, Growtac’s sole US distributor, put together an insightful video answering some common questions about them:

Key Highlights:

  • The Growtac Control Levers are compatible with mountain derailliuers. They come with a separate plate that, when swapped, changes the pull range from road to mountain and vice versa.
  • They work with anything from 1x to a triple.
  • An index plate could potentially be forthcoming. This would allow 11- and 12-speed users to have a way to set up fully mechanical systems without resorting to hydraulic brakes with their SRAM and Shimano groupsets.
  • They use a short pull brake ratio.

I got to ride these on a fast group ride at MADE last year and was very impressed. I’ve waxed lyrical about my love for friction shifting in the past, and these seem to be another fantastic way to reap the benefits of that mode of shifting. I’ll have these in-hand soon, so be sure to stay tuned for a full review.
