A year after we first spotted a prototype version online, the friction-shifting Growtac Equal Control Levers are now available through Velo Orange. Learn more about the enigmatic Japanese-made levers and find a link to buy a pair here…
Built around broad compatibility and friction-based operation, the new Growtac Equal Control Levers are said to work seamlessly with nearly any drivetrain, enabling users to mix and match parts from a medley of manufacturers, groupsets, and speeds, whether that’s a modern road or mountain derailleur, something from the golden age of seven/eight/nine-speed triples, or a mix of both. They aim to reduce compatibility woes and offer precise shifting no matter the mismatch. “If it shifts, these levers can handle it,” according to Velo Orange.

The levers are design to pair perfectly with Growtac Equal mechanical disc brakes, but they’re fully compatible with a wide range of mechanical disc and rim brakes. The Velo Orange team reports that they offer smooth modulation, reliable stopping power, and a refined feel with a slender, ergonomic hood shape and adjustable reach to suit various hand sizes and preferences. Buyers can mix and match levers, which are sold individually, to dial in the ideal setup for their drivetrain. A shifter weighs 204 grams, and a brake-only lever weighs 133 grams. They’re priced at $212 and $125, respectively, and are available now.
