Rene Herse Cycles just announced an updated version of a classic stem for 1″ threaded steerers that features a unique cutout design and super light construction. Learn more about the Rene Herse Stem (and nifty light knob) here…

This morning, Jan Heine at Rene Herse Cycles announced an updated version of what he says is the most iconic stem of all time. The new Rene Herse Stem is available now as part of a fully integrated system that includes a decaleur, light switch, and a few other small parts.

However, this is no ordinary stem. It uses an unusual attachment method that requires a tube to be brazed or glued inside the fork’s threaded steerer, and the stem then clamps onto that tube, allowing it to be smaller and lighter than a standard stem that has to fit around a larger diameter steerer. The tube is included and available in two wall thicknesses: 1.5mm for most riders and 1.8mm for heavier riders and folks who like to run their bars extra high, which puts more stress on the tube. As for brazing or gluing, the team at Rene Herse recommends consulting with a qualified frame builder.

The unique design also means the inside of the steerer tube is empty, leaving room for one of their quirky new light switches, which Jan developed more than a decade ago. “I developed it and made one for myself way back in 2007, because I was tired of fumbling with my lights, not just when it got dark, but also when I rode through tunnels in the mountains. In my car, I can turn on all the lights with a single switch that’s right next to the steering wheel. No need to stop, get out and turn each light on individually,” he wrote on the Rene Herse blog. Those who aren’t interested in the light switch can opt for the simple top cap instead, and both come with two sets of O-rings for a perfect fit.

The new Rene Herse Stem is available in 60, 80, 90, and 100mm, and includes the inner tube for brazing, flex-free cable hanger for centerpull or cantilever brakes, and titanium hardware that’s tightened with a 5 mm Allen wrench. Buyers can choose between a standard or decaleur-compatible version. According to Jan, they only produced a limited number of these and they’re not sure if there will be another run due to the incredible difficulty of machining them.
