In this captivating talk from Bespoked UK, Martin Shepherd of Reynolds Technology explores the remarkable qualities of steel in bike frames. Watch the presentation in its entirety and learn why this timeless material remains a favorite among cyclists and frame builders for its blend of durability, versatility, and sustainability with a touch of history…
At last summer’s Bespoked UK, one of the standout moments for me was the Talks series lecture by Martin Shepherd, general manager of Reynolds Technology. You may have seen my mention of it in our coverage. Fortunately, for those who didn’t attend, I happened to stumble on a video released by the Cycle Maintenance Academy documenting the entire presentation. In summary, Martin began with a fascinating history of Reynolds—tracing the rise and fall of steel in the bike industry as aluminum and carbon took center stage—and discussed its current resurgence in popularity. He delved into the unique qualities of steel, emphasizing its ability to be endlessly recycled and repurposed; your bike frame could even contain steel from an ancient Roman dagger. He also outlined the properties of Reynolds’ various tubing types, explaining what makes each one distinct. While the whole presentation was engaging, it was their environmental study that truly caught my attention. Find that and more in the video below.
