“Maverick by Necessity” is a new documentary-style short on Tailfin Cycling’s design process. Featuring an inside look at the Tailfin team and their unique design process, it provides an in-depth view of one of their newest products. Watch the 12-minute inside look at how their bags come to be here…
The team here at BIKEPACKING.com has been more than impressed with the Tailfin Bar Bag System released earlier this year. As a modular, durable, and well-thought out system that eliminates many of the common problems bikepackers face when mounting a bag to the front their bike, it wouldn’t be overkill to say they knocked it out of the park. And the people who make these products are as important as the wares themselves. In Maverick by Necessity, we get an inside look as to how the Bristol, UK-based Tailfin team goes about creating some of the most well-loved pieces of kit in the space.
The video may end up creating a swell of interest in working for Tailfin as much as it does for the product, and it makes sense that getting out and riding, gathering different perspectives from a swath of cyclists, and iterating on the design process through use would help in making some of the most thoughtful gear around. An interesting aspect of the video that stood out to me was how much simpler the process of testing an idea becomes with the use of in-house 3D printing. I’ve spoken to others in the industry who hail its use in their specific disciplines, and it’s cool to see how it worked in the process of creating this bar bag system.
