Last month, Atelier Olympia in Montreal, Quebec, held a launch party for its new house brand, Mondial. Mondial is the brainchild of Isaac Bonequi, the shop’s owner, and is his take on a versatile do-everything frame for commuting, touring, running errands, and more. I had a long call with Isaac before the event, during which he made it clear that a lot of passion and commitment went into developing the frame.
Mondial translates to “worldwide” in French. The goal was to offer a bike that was durable, compatible with modern standards, adaptable, and accessible with no proprietary parts or dead-end standards. The Mondial features a Chinese-made double-butted 4130 Chromoly steel frame, external cable routing, flat-mount brakes, a BSA threaded bottom bracket, and clearance for 700 x 45mm or 27.5 x 2.25″ tires. The frame uses a UDH dropout, a 27.2mm seatpost, and thru-axles. Isaac got into bike shops as a wheelbuilder, so he has an appreciation for the small details. He wanted a well-specced, reliable bike that didn’t break the bank, and complete bikes include custom-built wheels (quality rims, Shimano hubs, and brass nipples) with functional, but not expensive parts.
The Mondial is available as a frameset for $1,099 CAD (~$806 USD) or one of five complete builds ranging from $1,999 to $2,999 CAD (~$1,436 – $2,155 USD). The shop specializes in custom builds, so they can also help you put together something different if that’s what you’re after. There are five sizes and six stock color options: Matte Black, Matte Green, Sand, Pink, Chrome, and Lilac. Customers can choose a segmented steel fork with mounts for cages, racks, fenders, and more, or a carbon fork with three-pack mounts. The frame has internal dropper post routing, top tube bosses, rack mounts, and a kickstand mount behind the bottom bracket.
The five frame sizes feature size-specific angles. The head tube angle ranges from 71° to 72.5°, the bottom bracket drop is consistent at 70mm, and the chainstays are all 430mm. Mondial says the geometry is designed to suit different builds and components, including drop bars or flat bars. Dig into the complete geo chart below.
