The new Shimano CL-MT001 cleat is the company’s first update to their two-bolt design in nearly 30 years. Featuring an easy-entry design that allows greater engagement with their clipless systems, check out all the details on their new cleat down below…

The new Shimano cleat features a redesigned entry system that allows a greater variety engagement angles for their clipless pedals. According to Shimano, while the original SH51 cleat required a toe-first, single-entry approach, the CL-MT001 will allow riders to engage the pedal in a back to front, straight on, and angled point of entry. Amenable for any kind of rider, the new cleat design is meant to further simplify the problem of clipping in. Designed for a wide range of disciplines, the Shimano CL-MT001 cleat provides multi-directional entry for easier engagement, improved walkability, and greater durability in comparison to prior cleats.

If you’re concerned this means the onset of a new set of pedal standards, have no fear. The CL-MT001 is backward-compatible with the existing range of Shimano two-bolt cleats, and it offers the benefits of its new design to those system as well. Each CL-MT001 comes with two bolts, a shim, the cleat itself, and fixing hardware that ensures proper fit. Each cleat is made from heat-treated, forged steel that aims to provide a durable and consistent shape even after hundreds of engagements. While the prior iteration of the two-bolt SPD clear from Shimano never seemed to offer much issue, it’s good to see Shimano is focused on innovating existing designs to be even better. To do so in a way that doesn’t make the rest of the proven product line redundant is even better. The new Shimano cleat retails at $23 and can be found at any of their retailers.
