A year after an unsuccessful attempt to set a fastest known time on the Kokopelli and White Rim Trails, SCOTT athlete Ryan Standish returned for another crack at the combined routes. “One Year Older” documents his ride. Watch the 20-minute video here…

In last year’s Why Wait, SCOTT-sponsored athlete Ryan Standish attempted to set a fastest known time (FKT) on the combined Kokopelli and White Rim Trails, taking on the 300-mile route with 26,000 feet of climbing fully unsupported. The arid environment’s rugged terrain and lack of water pushed him to his limit, and he ultimately abandoned his attempt. Now a year older and wiser, he returned for another ride of the route, this time with the support of a small crew and friends, letting go of the rigid FKT rules in hopes of completing the spectacular track.

Again this year, Ryan’s motivation and inspiration comes from his dad’s daily battle with multiple sclerosis and his appreciation for his ability to attempt such endeavors while he can. Witnessing his father’s struggles has reshaped his perspective and led him to finding fulfillment in the effort itself, rather than the results. With his return ride, he hoped to inspire his dad by finishing what he’d started.

One Year Older is the story of persistence, growth, and honoring a commitment. It’s less about redemption and more about perspective: what it means to return, try again, and finish. As Ryan reflected, “Stuff gets hard, but if you don’t get back up and try again, what’s the point of setting the goal in the first place?” Watch the 20-minute video above.
