The new Pace RC429 is a downcountry steel hardtail that shows a lot of promise as a bikepacking rig and do-it-all trail bike. It’s available with a flat or drop bars, a suspension or rigid fork, and has a Reynolds steel frame with modern specs. Find details, photos, and pre-order information here…

The new Pace RC429 is the sibling to their rowdier and longer-travel RC529. According to Pace, the RC429 aims to “redefine what’s possible within this segment [with] a range of applications and builds from trail to bikepacking, flat bar to drops.” At first glance, it looks like it might be best suited to fast cross-country mountain bike rides and fully loaded backcountry bikepacking trips.

The Pace RC429 features externally routed cables, dropper post routing, boost hub spacing with thru-axles, and a good selection of mounting points (including multiple bottle mounts inside the main triangle and under the down tube), top tube mounts, and rear rack mounts. It’s built up around a Reynolds 853 steel frame and is designed to play nicely with 100-130mm travel forks or a compatible rigid fork, such as the Pace Carbon Fork. The frame is SRAM UDH/T-Type compatible and has clearance for 29 x 2.6″ tires.

Pace is offering three complete build variations: T Pack (trail build), D Pack (downcountry build), and G Pack (gravel build). Within each variation are three build options that range from £3,279 to £5,479, depending on the component group and whether you want a rigid or suspension fork. It’s also available as a rolling chassis (frame, fork, wheels) for £1,734 with a carbon fork or £2,459 with a Pike Ultimate fork and as a frame-only for £899. Custom builds are also available upon request.

As for geometry, it has a 65.5° head tube angle and 75.5° seat tube angle with a 120mm fork. All sizes have 440mm chainstays and a 70mm bottom bracket drop. Pace does a good job at breaking down the geometry, depending on what travel or type of fork is used. The Pace RC429 comes in four sizes (S-XL) and three colors (Moss Grey, Sid Blue, and Rioja Red). Pace is asking for a 20% deposit to reserve your frame. Mediums and larges are expected to arrive in March, and smalls and XL are scheduled for June. The RC429 is designed and tested in North Yorkshire, England, but the frames are manufactured in the Czech Republic.
