Sometimes, it takes a specific push for makers to start offering a new product, and in the case of Smith Levi of RatKing Frames, it took becoming a father to really think about offering a cycle truck. Smith had been toying with the idea of building one for over a decade but never really had a good reason. All that changed when he became a dad. Smith explains, “I’m looking for more ways to bring Frank along with me; the timing finally feels right. Gas prices being what they are certainly helped, too.”
The new RatKing Chull is Smith’s take on the ultimate dad cycle truck for rides into town, errands, and post office runs. It is built around a 20-inch front wheel and a low, frame-mounted cargo platform, with a 26- or 29-inch rear wheel to keep the bike rolling efficiently. The cargo platform measures 16 × 20″, with a 14 × 16″ cargo area that extends forward of the head tube. It’s also fully removable for when you don’t need it.
Smith explains that the geometry is designed specifically around a loaded front platform, with a short overall wheelbase and steering intended to remain controlled and intuitive under load. The target load capacity is 75 pounds, and it’s not intended to carry children or other humans. The frame uses a mix of straight-gauge 4130 and Reynolds 631 chromoly steel tubing, and features 12mm thru-axles, IS disc brake mounts front and rear, a 30.9 mm seatpost with dropper routing, a 73mm BSA bottom bracket, and clearance for 2.4″ tires.
