Our Reader’s Rig of the week comes from Luke in San Francisco, who shares the Toyo-built Rivendell Atlantis he’s been lucky enough to have on long-term loan. Meet Luke, learn about his bike, and find some photos of it at the recent MADE show in Portland here…

Hey there! I’m Luke, and I do product development and logistics for Merry Sales. I’ve lived in San Francisco for quite some time and feel spoiled by the inner city trails and the easy access to the Headlands. If I’m being totally honest, though, I’m definitely an 80/20 kinda guy (80% commuting by bike and 20% recreating by bike), commuting to South San Francisco every day from the City. Either way, I just… love bikes. Going to MADE this year only further confirmed that I’ve got the bug and this industry is the place for me.

As for the bike? Well, I’d wanted an Atlantis ever since I first saw one in 2008, and I finally made that dream come true with a 2022 Atlantis. I have that thing set up as a fully rigid MTB (2.25″ knobbies are sick on that!) and it’s what I call my “monster truck.”
Recently, I had the good fortune to meet Olivier, a wonderful artist who does a lot of design work for Rivendell. Recognizing that I have a deep-seated love for Rivendell generally and the Atlantis specifically, he offered to give me his Atlantis on a “long-term loan” basis. I came by his house and snagged this Atlantis (frame, fork, headset, crankset, brakes, saddle) and built it up that night.
- Frame/Fork: Rivendell Atlantis (#0148!)
- Rims: Velocity Dyad 36H front/rear (wheels built by Rich Lesnik)
- Hubs: Shimano dynamo hub (front) / Silver 11-speed (rear)
- Tires: Soma Cazadero 700 x 50
- Handlebars: Nitto B802 HT
- Headset: Vintage Tange
- Crankset: Sugino
- Pedals: MKS Gamma samples
- Cassette: S-Ride 11-40 9-speed
- Derailleur(s): XTR M952
- Brakes: Shimano
- Brake levers: Prototype IRD levers
- Shifter(s): Silver DT shifters
- Saddle: Brooks
- Seatpost: Campagnolo
- Stem: Nitto Technomic
- Front bags: Hungry Mini Smorgy proto (off camera!)
- Other accessories: Lil twisty flowers from the amazing Ghooost & rear reflector from Visto
Since then, I’ve sorta made it my own, adding a lot of parts bin stuff (or mostly—I had to get a bunch of Tange and Nitto!). I love it. I just don’t see myself ever not having both an MIT and Toyo Atlantis. This bike is so very fun to ride, and it’s even more special that it’s from the first 150 made!
