Surly just restocked three classic accessories to help you 86 your derailleur: the Surly Singleator, Hurdy Gurdy, and Tuggnut. Same proven function with fresh looks—find details here and grab them while they’re in stock…
Good news for folks chasing the quiet, pure singlespeed life. Surly just restocked (or rereleased) three staple bits that make ditching derailleurs: Singleator, Hurdy Gurdy, and Tuggnut. A few of us were worried Singleator was gone for good—I’m personally holding on to one in my gear stash. Here are the details:
Surly Singleator ($45)
Bolts to a standard derailleur hanger to take up chain slack on frames with standard dropouts. Spring tension keeps the chain snug over rough stuff, and the adjustable chainline helps you line things up. Runs happily with common singlespeed/fixed chains and cogs; ideal for quick 1x conversions or dedicated SS setups without sliding dropouts. I ran it on my Cotic Solarismax for a while; no complaints!
Hurdy Gurdy ($30)
A compact, burly chain tug for horizontal/track-style dropouts with quick-release hubs. It holds the axle square while you dial in chain tension, so your wheel doesn’t creep forward under load. Great for older cross frames, townies, and any Surly with rearward-facing ends. It will work with standard QRs, bolted axles, and nutted axles up to 10mm.
Tuggnut ($30)
A bombproof 10mm bolt-on chain tugger that keeps your wheel exactly where you set it. Investment cast stainless, long adjustment range via two axle hole options, and that signature built-in bottle opener for post-ride libations. Works on most rearward-facing dropouts and pairs well with singlespeed MTBs, Rohloff setups, and cargo rigs.
According to Surly, each has a slightly different look but is functionally the same. Grab them while they’re available at your local bike shop and learn more over at SurlyBikes.com.
