Roaming Rwanda is a new cycling documentary from Laurens ten Dam’s media company Live Slow Ride Fast. Showing both the pointy end of the most recent race as well as a poignant but important recent history of Rwanda, this film is more than just your average race video…

Made by Live Slow Ride Fast media, Roaming Rwanda is a new cycling documentary that follows the most recent iteration of the Race Around Rwanda—an ultra-endurance cycling event that leads participants on a spectacular route through the beautiful Rwandan countryside. With Live Slow Ride Fast being owned by one of the leaders, former world tour pro Laurens ten Dam, it makes sense that a good portion of the documentary follows him, co-owner Stefan Bolt, and eventual winner Ted King.

However, what the documentary includes about Rwanda expands beyond the bounds of racing exploits. Intermixing the race check-ins and updates with a context of the recent, difficult history of Rwanda, Roaming Rwanda is a beautiful, realistic look at what it is to race abroad. As bikepacking and ultra-distance events continue to spread across the world, it’s important to recognize the context in which we engage with when visiting other places. For the first time in what feels like a while, this film seems to appropriately address the environment in which the racers ride through in a mature, composed, and eloquent fashion.
