To celebrate the holidays and deliver on features the community has been requesting, Ride with GPS released several new features for its web and mobile route-planning apps. Discover all the new tools here…

Aside from being one of the best route-planning tools in the biz, Ride with GPS (RWGPS) stands out by updating its apps with valuable updates and add-ons throughout the year. For example, they added Advanced Map Layers with weather and condition map layers this summer. They also added the 7-day and 30-day heat map layers earlier in the spring, which is incredibly useful for getting a clearer snapshot of where people are riding.

According to RWGPS, they’ve started a holiday tradition to create a list of impactful features our community has been requesting and then build as many of them as possible during the month of December. Eight updates are currently announced, outlined below, and we’re told there are more coming. Keep an eye on our Friday Debrief this week for the rest!

Version History in the Route Planner

Ever wished you could access a previous version of a route you’re working on? Now, when you save changes to a route, you can pull up its history and restore previous versions, allowing you to plan without fear of losing any of your painstaking edits.

Drag & Drop Files into the Route Planner

Being able to drag and drop route files directly into the route planner is a simple but effective way to make planning more intuitive and efficient by allowing for instant edits and customization. Premium members can import multiple files at once for even greater ease of use, especially for longer or multi-day routes requiring separate files. Accepted file types include GPX, FIT, TCX, and KML.

Unpaved Cycling Layer in the Mobile App

Previously only available on the desktop app, you can now tap the layers icon to instantly identify unpaved trails, road, and cycling paths near you. The display works by showing a red and white dotted line on the route—in both planning and viewing modes—which translates to a red and white striped color field on the elevation profile. Keep in mind that the Unpaved Cycle layer can only be viewed in conjunction with the RWGPS Cycle map type.

Route Share Cards

Share Cards were released to allow users to showcase their favorite rides, but now you can use them for routes, too. From the mobile app or on the web, you can instantly generate route share cards that feature a map image, a photo, or a QR code that your ride buddies can scan at the pre-ride meetup.

Right-Click to Make Route Selection

While route planning, it’s common to need to select a specific section of a route to quickly identify distances between resupply points, change the surface type, or mark exact points for elevation over a portion of the route. You can now zoom in anywhere along a route line and make selections with perfect precision using a simple right-click for much more intuitive and accurate planning. Premium subscribers also get an estimated time for how long it will take based on their own personal ride data.

Right-Click to Duplicate a Selection

Similar to the route selection feature, users can now also quickly duplicate a section of a route to edit it smaller sections, make a side-by-side comparison, or even export a long route into shorter daily sections without losing the full one. Premium subscribers can now do all of that using the duplicate selection tool. All it takes is a right-click in the elevation profile.

Improvements to the Left Side Panel of the Route Planner

They’ve added three simple but effective ways to tidy up planning, all available in the left side panel of the route planner. RWGPS users can now drag routes into their preferred order, double-click to quickly rename routes, and toggle the eye icon to hide routes or make them visible.
