May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and for the fourth year running, Sarah Swallow is hosting a challenge that encourages folks to join her in getting out to move for an hour a day between May 1st and 30th. For many of us, that might be taking a ride, but it can also be a walk, a hike, or whatever else shakes up our increasingly sedentary routines.
Introducing her motivations for this year’s challenge on Instagram, Sarah wrote, “Regular outdoor activity not only helps me have a routine, gets me out of negative thought patterns, and gets me in touch with my physical body, but it is scientifically proven to boost endorphins, which leads to better brain health and cognitive function.”
The 2024 edition of the One Hour a Day Challenge is quite informal, and to participate, Sarah suggests a simple declaration of your intent to take part on social media. You can also use the hashtag #onehouradaychallenge so Sarah and others can follow along and foster a supportive community. Beyond participating in the challenge, Mental Health Awareness Month is a good time to remember to check in on your friends and yourself. For my part, I’ll be out pedaling an hour a day this month, and I hope you’ll consider doing the same as time permits.
