According to reporting from the team at Rene Herse Cycles, who have been closely monitoring the ongoing situation since early last month, we have some good news worth celebrating today: renowned ultra-distance rider Sofiane Sehili of France will be released from prison in Russia shortly. He was detained on September 2nd while crossing the border between China and Russia, just 200 kilometers shy of completing his record attempt for the fastest bicycle crossing of Eurasia, from southern Portugal to Vladivostok, Siberia.
Describing the situation, Sofiane’s partner, Fanny Bensussan, said, “Sofiane’s court hearing was today. Our Russian lawyer did remarkable work to get a decision as quickly as possible—and a positive decision, too! We kept all this confidential, so she could move forward without interference. Thank you for all your support during these two long months. Thank you for your patience. Thank you for just being there. It’ll take a few days to organize Sofiane’s return—then the next update will be from him.”
Sofiane was fined 50,000 rubles (around $615 USD) by the court, which is expected to be waived in light of the considerable time Sofiane spent in detention. His incredible race performances and unwaveringly positive spirit have inspired countless people around the world over the years, and we’re all eager to see him reunited with his loved ones and back in his home country soon.
