The budget-friendly State 4130 Trail is a modern steel hardtail that offers impressive value. Today, it’s available with a suspension fork, a rigid carbon fork, or a rigid steel fork, plus several drivetrain options. Find all the details here…

The State 4130 Trail packs a big punch for a $1,500 hardtail. It has all the specs we like to see, including external cable routing, a 4130 Chromoly steel frame, three places to mount bottle cages, internal dropper routing, and boost hub spacing. In Skyler’s review earlier this year, he highlighted its comfortable fit, inspiring ride quality, and robust frame.

Previously only available as a complete build or frameset with a 130mm RockShox Psylo Silver RC fork, State has expanded the 4130 Trail lineup into a configurable platform with two drivetrain options, three forks to choose from, three colors, and the option to upgrade components. The most exciting addition is the option to purchase the 4130 Trail with either a carbon or steel rigid fork.

The carbon fork weighs just 563 grams (1.2 pounds) and has three-pack mounts and rack mounts, and it happens to clear a 32 x 2.4″ wheel for mullet setups. The steel fork weighs 1,814 grams (4 pounds) and has four-pack mounts and rack/fender mounts. Both forks have a shorter axle-to-crown than the 130mm-travel fork, which should steepen the front end, lower the bottom bracket, and shorten the wheelbase, possibly changing the bike’s demeanor. Choosing the carbon fork also drops the weight of a complete build substantially, with the M/L build weighing a hair over 28 pounds. The steel fork build in the same size weighs 30 pounds and 12 ounces, and the suspension build weighs 32 pounds and 8 ounces. Both rigid forks are available separately for $180 (steel) and $325 USD (carbon).

State has also added two drivetrain options. The mechanical build runs a Shimano Deore M6100 1×12 drivetrain in the Raw Phosphate and Hammered Tobacco colorways, while the Sagebrush Green build runs MicroShift XLE 1×11. Every colorway is also available with a SRAM Eagle Transmission AXS wireless drivetrain with an unusual 10–52T XS-1270 cassette on a standard HG freehub. Looking at the price options below, the mechanical build with the steel fork looks like a steal for $1,200 USD.

4130 Trail Complete Build Pricing

Build Cable (Shimano / MicroShift) SRAM Eagle Transmission AXS
Suspension $1,500 $2,000
Carbon rigid $1,400 $1,900

Alongside the new options are the regular upgrades State offers, including an Industry Nine Sector Carbon wheelset add-on for $1,000, a PNW Range Dropper and lever for $200, a Seekrun S7 wireless dropper post bundle for $230, and cockpit and brake upgrades. It’s cool to see State trying to accommodate every budget and preference. The Sagebrush Green and Raw Phosphate colorways are still available, and State added a fresh Hammered Tobacco colorway that’s available in complete builds or as a frameset.
