Undoubtedly, one of the most well-recognized names in mountain biking is Specialized. The model that started it all for the US brand, the Stumpjumper, is the subject of their new short feature on the history of its development. In The History of the Stumpjumper, Specialized recounts the origins of the model, where it all began, how it developed over time, and what sits at the center of this iconic bike’s identity.

Through fun looks at the early days of the fledgling sport, the triumphs of team Stumpjumper, and how the model evolved in accordance with the development of suspension technology, dropper posts, and the increasingly skill of the general mountain biking populous, The History of the Stumpjumper provides a unique, brand-led insight as how they helped shape an entire industry.

Of course, the Stumpjumper has remained among the most coveted vintage bikes, and it still makes a great ATB today. While I’m sure we all miss the days of Specialized and other large US-based bike brands making genre-defining products out of steel, the evolution of the “Stumpy” over time is really interesting, and it’s an indicator of just how far mountain biking has come since the late ’80s and early ’90s.
