Prior to today, the only shifter options for bikes with a Pinion gearbox was a grip shift or an electronic Smart.Shift shifter. Now, the new Tout Terrain Shift:R Trigger offers a mountain bike style, thumb-operated lever. Find everything you need to know about it here…

The sealed Pinion gearbox drivetrain has become popular for a variety of reasons, including the fact that it’s mostly maintenance-free, reliable, and extremely durable. However, despite the growing number of Pinion-equipped bikes coming to market, there’s still one aspect of the Pinion system that’s likely held people back: the Pinion grip shifter. In 2022, Pinion introduced Smart.Shift, an electronic, push-button shifting option, but it’s only compatible with Smart.Shift gearboxes, so it cannot be retrofitted to a standard Pinion system. Fortunately, there’s another option, as of today.

Diehard Pinion fans and the Pinion-curious among us will likely be excited to learn that Tout Terrain just released the first mechanical trigger shifter designed specifically for the Pinion gearbox. The new Tout Terrain Shift:R Trigger is a dual-lever, indexed Pinion shifter that offers the familiar ergonomics of a rapid-fire derailleur shifter and is compatible with Pinion C-Line Gearboxes. It has two stacked levers that are easily actuated with your thumb, and can shift one gear higher (faster) or up to two gears lower (slower) at a time, similar to a traditional trigger shifter.
