Italy

Weekend Snapshot

By Ann Driggers

At the end of November, autumn wanderlust took our group of 10 family and friends on a gravel bikepacking adventure through Tuscany and Lazio regions of Italy. Starting in the Renaissance city of Florence, we rode through olive and hazelnut groves, forests of rust brown oaks and chestnut trees, rolling farmland, and vineyards lined with cypress trees to medieval mountaintop villages where we spent the nights. Along rugged woodland tracks, acorns crunching beneath our wheels, we pedaled over the smooth famed white gravel of L’Eroica and the Strade Bianchi and teeth-chattering, 2,000-year-old Roman stone roads, fueling with copious amounts of espresso and wine, cheese, bread, prosciutto, and all manner of delicious Italian cuisine before reaching the Eternal City of Rome after 250 miles.

Brazil

The São Francisco River forms one of the largest river basins in the world and is of fundamental importance for the economy of the northeast of Brazil and its people. Three friends and I decided to cycle the last 500 kilometers of the river until it ended in the sea. The choice to visit small towns and villages on the banks of the river led us to some very demanding terrain for cycling: sand, mud, gravel, backroads, and countless hills. We traveled to isolated places, camped in canyons, met ordinary people, and spent time in charming villages fed by fishing, art, and history. The whole adventure is on YouTube.

Canada

Weekend Snapshot

Tis the season of darkness on British Columbia’s coastline. In these light-devouring days, the sliver of time between the end of my shift and sundown is very narrow and oft requires a certain level of bravery to ride in rainy conditions. Miles and I lucked out with an optimal winter weather window for a little jaunt around the loamier zones of town at a stop-and-go, conversational pace.
