I had planned to get away for a trip in the Scottish Highlands before summer ended, but it seems “summer” can be an abstract concept in Scotland. I rode the entirety of the Badger Divide north with squelchy shoes, but then slowly dried out as I took a section of the Cairngorms Loop back South again. Thankfully, the bleak conditions only served to enhance the natural beauty of it all.

Brazil is vast. Would I recommend cycling in the Viana Canyons in Piauí? It’s complicated! It’s intense, it leaves its mark, it leaves you with saudade (memories). The place and, above all, the people. We spent four days there, and when we left, we thought we could have stayed much longer. There’s so much to see and experience. But it’s not a summer camp; it’s not designed to host people for days on end. You have to create this warmth with the permission of the locals. We left the Viana Canyons with the impression we had created this bond. You could call it an exchange. The way the valley welcomed us was warm. Generosity and mutual respect.
