France

October can be a beautiful season to ride the perfect gravel road of south France, with decent temperatures, long enough days, and less tourism. The only downside is hunting season, so be sure to wear flashy colors!
Dome Plateau, Utah
By Bob Stovern
I just completed a fantastic two-day trip across the Dome Plateau. There was a lot of standing water in the desert, which made navigation challenging (deep puddles, mud, and eroded ruts). The views improved at the top of every hill, and the campsite at the high point overlook has got to be one of the best views near Moab. You will not want to leave. This area can experience heavy side-by-side and jeep traffic during busy weekends, but I only passed two groups over two days. Highly recommend experiencing this area on a bicycle, especially the maze of jeep roads in the highlands.
Maryland, USA
By Jesse Koplowitz
This was at the Big Slackwater section of the C&O Canal, where the canal dumps into the Potomac for a stretch. I was there leading a group of 13 high school students and two chaperones on a three-day bikepacking field trip. The canal is a great place for novices, with no hills or cars, but with ample camping spots.
