Three of us caught the ferry to Holyhead from Dublin for a long weekend of rough stuff. The locals were welcoming, the water was warm, and the trails were often non-existent. Highlights included meeting an old friend and learning some Welsh in the local pub.

Not exactly the definition of a Weekend Snapshot, as this photo was taken on a Wednesday evening. But with a few busy weekends ahead, sometimes the best overnight escape happens during the week. Leave after dinner, ride into the sunset, sleep under the stars, and be back in time for work the next morning. The reward? Golden light at both ends of the ride.

A weekend route on the remnants of the industrial past in the valleys of southern Wales. Linking canal towpaths with converted railway trails using a few forest tracks gave an almost entirely traffic-free route under perfect summer sunshine.
