We have a trio of wintry Weekend Snapshots today, including snowy scenes from Switzerland and Canada and one from a frosty overnighter in California. Take a look at all three and find a link to share snippets of your weekend getaways here…

As with every Monday, we highlight three interpretations of the weekend escape for today’s Weekend Snapshot. This time around, we visit Canada, Switzerland, and the Western US, where three folks from our global community of bikepackers find clear signs of winter setting in. We invite you to check them all out below, then use the form at the bottom of this post to share a photo from a recent trip of your own!

Carrizo Plain National Monument, California

Weekend Snapshot

By Michael Duffy

I spent the last couple of days before a big rainstorm doing a 60-mile overnighter in Carrizo Plain National Monument here in Central California. During my two-day ride, I only bumped into one rancher and one BLM employee in this beautifully stark location. The weather was very cold at night, but otherwise, it was perfect for riding.

I was a bit frustrated when I first saw the weather forecast for last Saturday. After a long period of dry weather, they predicted rain and snow for the @gravelleclub +FRIENDS ride. No reason to complain though, it’s winter and that’s actually the normal weather for this time of the year. Still, there was more snow than expected, which made the riding fun but also challenging. Although some (or maybe most of us) couldn’t feel their toes anymore by the end of the ride, the stoke was high, and Glühwein and a fire helped to get the blood circulating again. It’s often the gnarly days on the bike we remember most, and I’m pretty sure this was a day we won’t forget.

Ontario, Canada

Weekend Snapshot

By Jason Deyo

The morning of my first snowy overnight this season. I love being mindful as the seasons transition one into the other. I arrived with leaves on the ground and left with snow. I had a series of tarp avalanches through the night, which woke me each time. Lots of coyotes yipping and howling, too. I wonder if they celebrate the arrival of winter?
