After Neil published his microSHIFT Advent MX review, several commenters chimed in to voice their appreciation for the high-quality, modern 10- and 11-speed drivetrains. In response, we shared a poll with options ranging from 9 to 14 speeds in last week’s Friday Debrief, asking our readers how many speeds are ideal for their 1x systems. With 1,111 responses, we have a good idea of how those preferences break down.

What Number of Speeds is ideal?

The 11-speed category won by just three percentage points, with 36.7% of the vote, followed by 12-speed, which got 33.7%. The third-largest, 10-speed, received 16.8%, well over double that of 9-speed at just 6.1%. Funnily enough, the 13-speed category got even fewer votes than the 1 x 14-speed category. It’s an interesting insight into the preferences of the now well-established 1x category, and perhaps a sign to drivetrain manufacturers that enough might finally be enough.
