Founded by Australian Ty Domin (find a few of his contributions linked below) and currently based in Edmonton, Alberta, Yeah Nah Thread Works is a small handmade studio offering bikepacking bags, backpacks, and now apparel. Following a series of increasingly complex prototypes intended to keep warm on winter rides down to -40°C, Ty ultimately arrived at the simplest and most versatile solution with the All-Day Touque. It’s a two-part system that consists of a touque/beanie style hat with a flat brim for protection from the elements paired with a color-matched neck warmer that can be pulled up over the face.

Describing the design and development process, Ty wrote, “It started with the skull cap, however, the lack of brim was disadvantageous on two fronts: the sun still shines in winter and, unless the skull cap goes all the way down to your eyebrows, wind chill will give you an ice-cream headache quick smart. It turns out that the brim acts as a wind and snow deflector and helps regulate temperature even when sun or snow aren’t around. Getting the brim right was a challenge in itself, it’s amazing how important the right curve and the right width actually is!”

Both parts of the Yeah Nah Thread Works All-Day Touque are constructed from Polartec Power Grid, which Ty describes as a fabric that’s “hydrophobic and manages moisture to a degree that is almost magical.” The fabric’s grid pattern has open air channels that allow air to circulate, which increases its wicking capabilities and thermal warmth while keeping the weight low. It also helps improve breathability when used over the nose and mouth.

Buyers can choose from a mix of four colors (grey, brass, orange, and blue) and three sizes. Additional options include a button-up closure for the neck warmer so it can be added/removed without needing to take off your helmet and an independent face mask with a lower vent for riding in extreme cold. Depending on options, the All-Day Touque system costs between $70 and $85 CAD ($52 and $63 USD).
