The Yokozuna Big6 disc brake is a cable-actuated hydraulic caliper with six pistons for maximum stopping power. For more on this new hydraulic caliper, get all the details below…
The Yokozuna Big6 disc brake is a new offering distributed by Merry Sales that is somewhat similar to Yokozuna’s other well-known brake, the Ultimo. Using a hydraulic caliper actuated by a cable, these six-piston calipers are supposed to offer the best of both worlds with the benefits of hydraulic upkeep, or lack thereof, and the ease and repairability of a cable actuated disc brake. Like their namesake suggests, the Big6 brake upgrades on the Ultimo calipers by offering two more coated pistons for massive amounts of stopping power. The Yokozuna Big6 disc brake uses a flat mount or post mount standard and mineral oil, includes compressionless brake cable housing, has a 160mm rotor minimum, and weighs 180 grams. Unfortunately, as of now, these calipers are only available in a short-pull orientation, making them ideal for road and gravel bikes.
While some say the mechanical/hybrid system works great and offers some field repairability because of its mode of actuation, others have said the closed nature of the hydraulic caliper makes it difficult or altogether impossible to fix the system if something ever goes wrong. It would be nice if the Big6 were also offered in a long-pull variant, perhaps in a future release.
