As one of six official race photographers, I stayed in Cholpon-Ata to photograph all the finishers. The three control cars were on the course and more photos can be found on the PEdALED Silk Road Mountain Race website and Instagram.
Before the finish, all the riders must tackle Kok-Ayrik — it is the final pass and a new addition to the PEdALED Silk Road Mountain Race. An excerpt from this year’s race manual: “Its main difficulty lies in the quality of the road. This varies from really quite good at times, to utterly destroyed. There are many sections where landslides have completely obliterated the road. There will be quite a lot of walking as you pick your way over the rocks. The descent may well also be rather frustrating as the rough road and landslides will prevent you from cruising down to a lakeside finish. Please note that this was not sadism on our part but rather a means of finishing the race at the lake and avoiding the main road. The pass is also really quite scenic!”
The last 65 km (40 miles) took no less than seven hours and I don’t anyone really anticipated the difficulty of the pass, despite the manual description. There is service in Cholpon-Ata and thankfully it was possible to track every rider as they approached the finish. This resulted in riders arriving at the finish at all hours of the day and night. Some had camped before the pass, on the pass or ridden through the night. I would set periodic phone alarms in anticipation of when riders would arrive at the finish. It was always a guessing game. For some, the last 20 km of road took longer than anticipated — they were dealing with punctures and one rider rolled in after riding on the rim. A few others stopped along the home stretch to grab some ice cream.
I didn’t want to miss anyone and there was always someone to greet the finishers, whether those were the volunteers, other riders, Nelson’s parents or Nelson. Sometimes I would wake up Jakub Sliacan and Lael Wilcox so they could greet some of the night finishers per their request. It was an honor to be at the finish and share in such a special moment with all the riders. There were a lot of emotions and I’m happy to have captured some of it. Thank you for letting me be a part of it.
