The Grand Loop is a stunning 365-mile route that hits the Tabeguache Trail, Kokopelli Trail, and Paradox Trail in Southwest Colorado and Utah. It’s considered the original ultra-endurance bikepacking race. Although the grand depart took a long hiatus, it made a comeback last year and returned once again this spring. Over 40 riders were at the start line in Nucla, Colorado, and over half of them didn’t finish.
Among the brave souls who lined up for the 2024 grand depart was Katrina Hase from White Bear Lake, Minnesota. She has dreamed up riding the Grand Loop after riding a section of it with her friend Traci in 2022 during a ride on the San Juan Gravel Grinder Hut to Hut Tour. This was Katrina’s first bikepacking race, and while she researched and prepared for months, the ride didn’t go as planned. Watch the video she put together from her ride below.
