Prior to the Clean Water Act of 1972, the Potomac River was a dumping ground for industrial sludge, chemicals, and garbage that turned the once wild and scenic river into a toxic wasteland. Since then, years of hard work by environmentalists has cleaned it up and brought the river back to life. Or so best friends Michael Stevens and Grant Horton thought when they planned their epic adventure—to paddle the Potomac from their childhood home outside of Great Falls National Park to the Chesapeake Bay and then pedal their loaded bikes back.
