The Silk Road Mountain Race is arguably one of the most extreme off-road bikepacking races in the world, taking riders from 20º to 110ºF, from the high desert to snowy, high-elevation mountain passes in Kyrgyzstan. For 2024, Erin Poland and Jono Freeman are racing in the pairs category. Together is a short three-minute film about two of my friends, Erin Poland and Jono Freeman. Jono had raced Silk Road Mountain Race (SRMR) in 2023, and Erin had flown out to meet him at the finish line in Cholpon Ata. Based on the people they met and the landscapes they traveled through, they were inspired to sign up for this year’s edition and return to Kyrgyzstan together, racing in the pairs category.
I followed them for a few hours through the hills of Beacon, New York, as they started one of their final training trips. Their voiceover excerpts came from responses to a few questions I asked them later on. I didn’t know how the video would turn out, but I think I captured a nice little vignette of two people and their relationship with each other, on and off the bike. Watch it below.
