The Cairngorms National Park had been built up to near mythical stature in our heads. It’s a wild and remote region of the Scottish Highlands famed for its rugged geography and unforgiving conditions and a true beacon of UK wilderness that would ignite the imagination of even the hardiest of riders.
My partner Sarah and I had been trying to get there for two years, with train cancellations and hospital operations foiling previous plans. All the while, we heard countless tales from returning riders, sharing stories of the Cairngorms’ wonders and wickedness. A tease that just added to this wild image in our heads.
In November 2023, we finally got the chance to change the record. And, to do this long-awaited trip justice, we’d planned a particularly ambitious off-road route. It was time to see how our imaginations compared to reality. I’ve always been told that too many expectations can be a downfall. That was the case with this trip, but not how you might imagine.
The wheels rolled, spinning a tale with twists and turns, moral dilemmas and beautiful meetings in lonely places. The Cairngorms were everything we’d hoped for and more, but there was also disappointment and valuable lessons learned. Ours was a trip filled with such natural beauty but also one that would change the course of our riding for good.
In spring 2024, we’ll be setting off to cycle around the world. It’ll be our third attempt, and we’d love to take you along for the ride! Find more from us on Instagram.
