The Bikepacking Journal 13

Fall 2024

Printed in fall 2024, The Bikepacking Journal 13 was bursting with some of the year’s best long-form writing and photos from unforgettable rides around destinations including Peru, Armenia, New Mexico, France, Tanzania, the Western United States, and Cuba. Peek inside…

We’ve been thinking lately about vicarious living, a notion we used to find a little melancholy. Rather than living through someone else’s exploits, shouldn’t we be doing the thing ourselves? Shouldn’t we be out chasing experiences? Fast-forward some years and more than a dozen issues of The Bikepacking Journal, and we’ve slowly recognized an appreciation for the value of living vicariously, at least when paired with some time in the saddle.

After diving deep into an issue during the production phase and emerging with a printed copy in hand, our first thought is no longer, “We have to rush out and pedal through all of these places!” Instead, we’ve come to see joining contributors on their journeys through words and photos as a fulfilling experience unto itself. As enough. Engaging with their work on paper is a reliable source of inspiration and insight, and we’re grateful for all the care they put into sharing their stories.

This publication provides regular reminders that we can experience far more than just adventure when living vicariously. If we tune in, there’s much to glean from good travel writing beyond tales of escapades in far-off places. As you’ll discover in the 13th issue of The Bikepacking Journal, there’s also humility, compassion, joy, humor, struggle, wonder, gratitude, and more.
