Out There: Laura & Katie in The Great Basin

Wyoming’s Great Basin is a lonely and flat, yet formidable obstacle on the Tour Divide. Here’s a nice little video featuring Blackburn Rangers Laura and Katie as they tackle this 134 mile section of the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route…

Wyoming’s Red Desert contains an expansive and lonely area know as the Great Basin, a geographic anomaly where none of the water falling as rain to the ground drains into any ocean, directly or indirectly. Although the Basin’s rolling hills and spartan features make for relatively easy travel, the area has long been a formidable obstacle due to it’s lack of water and fierce winds.

In Blackburn’s latest film, Laura and Katie face the challenges, anxieties and… joys, of crossing the Great Basin during their bike trip along the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route.

Where?

The Great Divide Basin is an area of land in Wyoming’s Red Desert. It’s roughly rectangular in shape; the northwest corner is in the Wind River Range near South Pass, about 40 miles southwest of Lander, and the southeast corner is in the Sierra Madre Range near Bridger Pass, about 20 miles southwest of Rawlins. the section of the GDMBR that passes through the Basin is roughly 134 miles from Atlantic City to Rawlins.
