Built for show, the Curve team has used their resources to create a custom 32-inch Big Kev gravel bike. With the new wheel size, this 32er Big Kev features a fresh paint job and a custom steel fork from Cjell Mone. For more on this prototype, read on below…
Curve is an Australian bike company creating dirt-focused designs. Though they primarily produce their bikes with partners in Taiwan, they locally fabricated their latest prototype. The brand maintains a talented in-house team of builders, so they can often produce one-offs to test ideas like this. Iterating on their big-tire gravel bike, the Curve Big Kev 32 is a new concept bike made to gather impressions on the 32″ wheel size. It was built for their displays at the BESPOKED shows, but it also serves as a real-world test dummy for the intricacies and complications that come with larger wheels.
The most interesting element of this 32″ prototype is the fork. With developments in the 32″ space still in their infancy, few 32-inch-specific forks exist yet. Most are using existing 29″ options retrofitted for the larger tires, with some mention of carbon and custom options from larger companies potentially coming down the road. Curve wasn’t happy with this and decided to commission Cjell Mone to make what they’re saying is the first 32-inch-specific fork in the space.
Regarding the bike’s construction, Curve said, “The frame has been constructed using mainly Columbus Zona tubing sourced from the Australian distributor Hillbrick Bicycles. Since the tube options available from Columbus are not yet adapted to the 32” wheel size, we had to get a bit creative to make existing tubes and bend profiles suit the design by getting some one-off dropouts and a chainstay yoke 3D printed out of 316L Stainless steel.”
Asking Cjell to do so wasn’t an afterthought, either, since the brand had the Big Kev 32 fillet-brazed—a Cjell specialty. The matching fillet-brazed fork features a beautiful bend in its blades, plus a layered fork crown. The bike has been displayed raw, as well as with this stunning Aquamarine paint job in Osaka, Japan. The Curve Big Kev 32 also features new prototype rims and a SRAM Force drivetrain.
