Harriet and Neil Pike fell into biking almost by chance.
On a backpacking trip to Asia they grew disillusioned with the pace of bus travel, wanting to see more of the places in between, so having barely cycled before, bought bikes in Istanbul and cycled home to the UK. An 18 month trip to South America soon followed and a love affair with remote off-road riding began. When not scouring satellite images for 4x4 tracks on Google Earth, they can nowadays sometimes be found pedaling high dirt routes in the Andes or Himalaya, or biking to Andean volcanoes to continue towards summits on foot.
They’ve written Peru’s Cordilleras Blanca & Huayhuash: the Hiking & Biking Guide which will be published by UK-based Trailblazer Guides in January 2015. It details 30 days’ worth of cycling and 70 days of hiking trips that can be done in these Cordilleras as well as tips on how to make the most of any trip to Peru.
They blog about trips at Pikes on Bikes and also set up Andes by Bike to provide information for dirt road tourers in Peru, Argentina, Bolivia and Chile. Find them at these links:
