Rigs of the 2025 Pinyons and Pines
Starting and ending in Flagstaff, Arizona, the 2025 Pinyons and Pines bikepacking race follows a 340-mile route on some of the most magnificent terrain the state has to offer. Just in time for tomorrow’s grand depart, we gathered details for over 40 race rigs, featuring bag and gear highlights for each. Dig into them here…
PUBLISHED May 14, 2025
For many, Pinyons and Pines unofficially kicks off the bikepacking season in Northern Arizona, marking the beginning of warmer temperatures and mostly snow-free passes. Unlike most events, the Pinyons and Pines route changes each year, so although riders aren’t chasing records, there’s always a solid crew pushing the pace, and the route is normally around 300 miles. Last year, Jesse Reeves finished in first place with a time of just 1 day and 14 hours, and in 2023, Andrew Strempke finished in first place in 1 day and 11 hours, and he did it on a singlespeed!
The 2025 Pinyons and Pines route is 340 miles long with 30,000 feet of climbing. It’s a scenic tour of Northern Arizona, utilizing a mix of singletrack, doubletrack, and dirt roads, starting and finishing at Flagstaff Bicycle Revolution. This year’s route consists of a southern loop that takes in some of Sedona’s finest singletrack and a northern loop that winds its way past several extinct volcanoes. There are also two mandatory out-and-backs to summits, adding an interesting twist. Riders can choose between solo or duo (2-person team) categories.
The 2025 grand depart starts tomorrow morning at 6 a.m., and once again, we worked with organizers Dana Ernst and Dylan Turner and the participants to gather details for over 40 race rigs, featuring bike, bag, and gear highlights for each. Scroll through the submissions below, and then head over to the event page tomorrow morning to follow their progress live. But first, an introduction to this year’s event from Dana.
The 2025 Pinyons and Pines
Words by Dana Ernst
Pinyons and Pines has a reputation for bad weather. We’ve seen snow storms, massive rains, and intense wind, but the current weather forecast looks favorable. Hopefully, I didn’t just jinx us! We have roughly 70 riders expected to start Thursday morning. There are quite a few heavy hitters on the start list, too. A handful of names to keep an eye on are Abe Kaufman, Ezra Ward-Packard, Gregg Dunham, Holly Hovious, Jeff Kerkove, Karin Pocock, Leigh Bowe, Matt Annabel, Quinn Travis, and Stephen Scherle. There are also three teenagers lining up: Cruz Blue (age 16), McKenna, Marino (age 16), and Nixon Twomey (age 17). Our elder statesmen are Paul Kuzdas (age 67) and George Hollerbach (age 69). Moreover, we have eight women and two non-binary folks lining up. We are proud of these numbers, but there is room for improvement. More is better. Ladies and non-binary folks: we would love to have you participate in next year’s edition of P&P! Come join us.
Flagstaff sits at the base of the San Francisco Peaks, on homelands sacred to Native Americans throughout the region. The Peaks, which includes Humphreys Peak (12,633 feet), the highest point in Arizona, have religious significance to several Native American tribes. In particular, the Peaks form the Diné (Navajo) sacred mountain of the west, called Dook’o’oosłííd, which means “the summit that never melts.” The Hopi name for the Peaks is Nuva’tukya’ovi, which translates to “place-of-snow-on-the-very-top.” This year’s course traverses the ancestral homelands of the Hopi, Ndee/Nnēē (Western Apache), Yavapai, A:shiwi (Zuni Pueblo), and Diné (Navajo). We honor their past, present, and future generations, who have lived here for millennia and will forever call this place home.

BIKE: I will be riding a Chumba Yaupon, featuring a well seasoned SRAM mullet T-Type drivetrain 30T 10/52T. Force shifters and brakes. Chris King and SON hubs. NOX Teocalli rims, 28H, laced with Rene Herse Fleecer Ridge tires (Endurance casing). Suspension provided by a Rockshox SID Ultimate fork 120mm and a Cane Creek eeSilk seatpost. Ritchey WCS Beacon 46 handlebar. Berthoud Aspin saddle. Cane Creek eeWings 165. Ridefarr clip on aero bar system.
BAGS: Medley of Dispersed, Revelate Designs, and Tailfin. Velocio vest for water and miscellaneous. Frame bag will contain a water bladder and food carry.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: Sleep system: MSR Pro bivy, Western Mountaineering Highlite bag. Bar and helmet lights are from Fenix. Navigation is via a Wahoo Bolt. Tracking using a Garmin Inreach. Voltaic 6400mAh USB battery bank for charging. Gore rain jacket, Salewa puffy.

BIKE: 2022 Hudksi Doggler. The bike features Maxxis Forekaster 2.4” tires, new Hope RX4+ brakes in blue and rotors, WTB Rocket saddle, and some blue pops from Wolf Tooth. Everything else is stock.
BAGS: Custom Snack Bag (shoutout my wife, Lauren!), Osprey Escapist handlebar bag, Oveja Negra frame bag, Oveja Negra seat bag, and Osprey Escapist Velocity 6L on body.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: OR Helium Bivy, Therm-a-Rest Vesper 32 Quilt, and a NeoAir for sleeping, Garmin InReach Mini 2 for tracking. My iPhone 12 has a comically short battery life, so I have a Goal Zero external battery and solar panel. If all else fails, I’ll just follow the birds.

BIKE: “Lipstick on a Pig” – Reynolds 520 Kona Unit in “Dusty Rose Metallic,” over-forked at 120mm with a Marzocchi Bomber Z2. A 32t oval (Works Components) turns a 21t Surly cog (peep the drilled out holes – definitely ultralight).
Rolling on alloy Hunt Trail wheels wearing a custom Maxxis “SS/SSR” front / rear rubber combo. Shimano Deore stoppers on 203/180mm rotors. Tumbleweed T-rack spun aft a shade so my heels don’t clip the rack-stays. DOOM bars help set the tone. I’m running a minimally-trimmed down Ti Lucky Riser in an apocalypse-enduring (and fascist-quelling) 2mm wall thickness. Contact points: XTRA chunky-squishy ESIs, Selle San Marco Allroad, and Entity composite flats. 30W Bluetooth speaker for a soundtrack to the emotional rollercoaster.
BAGS: Ruthlessly precise Dispersed frame and top-tube bags. A highly-functional “Rack Roll” of the same bloodlines and equal precision. Some bulletproof (and insulated!) Nuke Sunrise “Silo” feed-bags.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: Pendleton wool shirt! It was a panic-pack item at DOOM and is quickly becoming one of my bikepacking staples. Sleep kit is minimal; chunk of foam, SOL escape bivy, puffy jacket and vest.

BIKE: I’ll be riding my 2022 Specialized Epic Evo with about 4,100 miles to its name. I’m using a super worn down Maxxis Aspen 2.4″ in the back and an equally beaten up (makes ’em roll faster) Vittoria Mezcal 2.35″ in the front. 1×12 30T chainring drivetrain. Ergon GS3 grips with a cool looking red cassette. Very awesome dropper post that rubs some aluminum in the interior that adds cool aluminum greasy slime all along the post that doesn’t come off your hands.
BAGS: Homemade handlebar bag and two home-made feed bags (kudos to father “working from home” for making them) Borrowed Aeroe Spider rack from Cruz Blue’s dad. Borrowed osprey daypack from mother. My very own personal Rouge Panda top tube bag.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: Navigating with Garmin Edge 540. Waterproof emergency blanket with backpacking blanket for sleep. Borrowed Sawyer mini water filter from Aunt. Mostly just making stuff up as I go. Goal is to finish, I have finals on Monday (starts on a Thursday).

BIKE: This is the same frame I used for the 2023 Tour Divide, though nearly everything has been upgraded since. It’s a 2020 Salsa Cutthroat outfitted with a SID 100mm fork and a SRAM AXS 1x mullet drivetrain. The wheels are custom-built with a SON dynamo front hub, DT Swiss 240 rear hub, and WTB CZR rims. I’m running Maxxis Ikons for tires, with a Specialized Power saddle and Garmin Rally power meter pedals rounding things out. Every component has been agonized over and refined through countless miles. While the build isn’t anything unusual, I’ve developed a deep connection to this bike.
BAGS: The original Salsa frame bag is still going strong. Everything else is Revelate Designs (and equally well tested): a Jerry Can for tools, a Mag Tank, and two Feed Bags for quick access to food.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: The water is carried in two bladders stashed in the frame bag. Navigation and tracking are handled by a Garmin Edge 540 Solar and an inReach Mini. Power comes from a Sinewave Beacon 2 and a Voltaic V50 battery. Under the frame protection tape, there are a few neon yellow reflective stickers for safety at night. The aero bars probably won’t see much use during this event, but they’re staying on just in case.

BIKE: Purple Surly Karate Monkey, XT-ish drivetrain, WTB CZR i30 wheels, Rubber: 2.4″ Rekon Race, Mone Meal Replacement Bars with the just the right amount of rise and sweep to keep my lungs expanding properly.
BAGS: Revelate Designs frame bag in need of a few patches, Dispersed top tube for all the burritos, Dispersed seat pack, Revelate bar roll. TBD if stem bag snack storage is necessary.
GEAR HIGHLIGHTS: I’ve been really enjoying the Apidura 3l frame bag bladder keeping the jangle to a minimum. Helium bivy, 40 degree bag, sleeping pad and a pillow shoved into the bar roll with puffy items in the seat bag. Wahoo bolt tucked in nicely on the stem and InReach Mini for dot following.
