First released in 2018, the X-Mid 1 was Durston’s flagship product, and its unique rectangular fly, parallelogram floor, and roomy design caught on quickly in the backpacking world. It wasn’t long before Durston tents drifted into the bikepacking realm, creating a reputation as highly functional and surprisingly affordable. Last week, Durston updated its two-person X-Mid 2 tent to be the lightest version yet, and the one-person X-Mid 1 follows in its steps with a whole suite of upgrades and tweaks.
The third generation of the Durston X-Mid 1 has been completely redesigned. Like the X-Mid 2, the construction method has been changed to use narrower seams and seam taping, shedding any unnecessary weight, and it’s being made with a new 15-denier high tenacity silpoly fabric. Other changes include a wider, longer, and taller interior, new sidewall pockets, upgraded hardware, and a tougher stuff sack. Despite these changes, Durston also dropped the total weight, shedding just under 100 grams (3.5 ounces) for a 1.6-pound (720-gram) total weight without the required trekking poles or carbon poles.
Everything that has made the X-Mid 1 so popular has remained unchanged, including its fly-first pitch, protected and spacious doorways, double-wall construction, and non-sag fabric. It has magnetic door toggles, stormworthy 50-55° exterior panels, dual peak vents, and two large doors with vestibules that don’t block them.
The new Durston X-Mid 1 costs $239 USD without the required stakes or trekking poles/carbon poles. Durston’s carbon Z-Flick poles are great for bikepackers who don’t carry trekking poles and cost $70/pair. Durston claims they’re the world’s lightest adjustable pole at just 88 grams (3.1 oz) each.
